Abstract
Background: The circulatory response to tracheal intubation was studied in 50 controlled hypertensive patients under general anaesthesia.
Method: They were randomly assigned to receive either fiberoptic assisted nasotracheal (FOB) or direct laryngoscopy assisted (DLS) orotracheal intubation. Blood pressure and heart rate was recorded following induction of anaesthesia, at intubation and next 10 minutes.
Result: Intubation time was significantly longer in the FOB group (P<0.001). Following intubation, mean arterial pressure and heart rate were significantly greater in the DLS group than the FOB group (P <0.05).
Conclusion: Fiberoptic assisted nasotracheal intubation evokes a lesser pressor response than direct laryngoscopy assisted orotracheal intubation in anesthetized controlled hypertensive patients.

Key words: Pressor response, Fiberoptic, Hypertension, Intubation
