Abstract
Objective: Cytokines immunological studies in schizophrenia are considered as an important issue. This clinical study between schizophrenia subtypes and the control group, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6 and IL-8 levels were compared.
Method: 61 patients were diagnosed according to DSM-IV schizophrenia and 25 healthy controls were studied. The patients underwent clinical and demographic information form. 8:00 to 9:00 morning venous blood samples from the patients and the control group were included, the serum IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6 and IL-8 levels were assessed by ELISA method.
Results: Serum IL-1β levels in patients with paranoid schizophrenia disorganized subtype, is statistically higher than the control group (p<0.05). According to IL-2 levels there was a significant difference between the residual, paranoid, disorganized and undifferentiated subtypes, and the (p<0.01). When IL-6 levels between residual schizophrenia and control groups were observed in a mild significant difference (p<0.05), this difference is much more significant in disorganized and paranoid sub-types compared with the control group (p<0.001). Serum IL-8 levels in patients with paranoid schizophrenia were statistically higher than disorganized, undifferentiated, residual and the control group (p<0.001).
Conclusions: Results of immunological changes in schizophrenia and that some of these changes suggest that schizophrenia may be related to differences in the clinical sub-types.
